On Saturday, July 23rd I got to enjoy my first Kpop experience, seeing one of my favorite girl groups Brave Girls ("BG") perform live in a packed house @ the Ebell Wilshire Theatre in Los Angeles. It was the culmination of a 6 months journey that began for me this past February in the most likely way. Let me explain:

During my weekly Gold Street marketing meeting with my assistant Catherine, we discussed the pros/cons of TikTok and Instagram’s new Video Reels, so I decided to check them out. While I had an IG account I wasn't really active on it but had posted a few pictures & videos of my daughter's award-winning In-Sync Show Choir and the IG algorithm decided to show me a bunch of Kpop female group content, mostly Black Pink for some reason - maybe because my daughter is ⅛ Japanese & looks Asian.  Having spent a lot of my earlier life pursuing a music career as a songwriter/producer I decided to check out their music on YouTube and watched a bunch of music videos & live concert performances. Next thing you know - I'm Hooked! And it was not just the music that got my attention but the amazing choreography, high production values, and sheer amount of video views (10's to 100's Millions) were staggering; Why haven't I heard of these guys before? IDK. Then the YouTube algorithm did its’ thing and up in my cue popped a video thumbnail for another female Kpop group - Brave Girls, and with a click of a button, everything changed.

어시스턴트인 Catherine 과의 주간 Gold Street 마케팅 회의에서 TikTok 과 Instagram 의 새로운 Video Reels 의 장단점에 대해 논의하여 확인하기로 했습니다. 나는 IG 계정을 가지고 있었지만 실제로 활동하지는 않았지만 수상 경력에 빛나는 내 딸의 In-Sync Show Choir 의 사진과 비디오 몇 장을 게시했고 IG 알고리즘은 나에게 많은 Kpop 여성 그룹 콘텐츠를 보여주기로 결정했습니다. Black Pink 는 어떤 이유에서인지 - 아마도 내 딸이 ⅛ 일본인이고 아시아인처럼 보이기 때문일 것입니다. 작곡가/프로듀서로 음악 경력을 쌓기 위해 많은 시간을 보냈던 저는 YouTube 에서 그들의 음악을 확인하기로 결정했고 많은 뮤직 비디오와 라이브 콘서트 공연을 보았습니다. 당신이 알고 있는 다음 사항 - 나는 Hooked! 그리고 내 관심을 끈 것은 음악뿐만 아니라 놀라운 안무, 높은 제작 가치, 엄청난 양의 비디오 조회수(천만에서 백만)였습니다. 왜 나는 전에이 사람들에 대해 듣지 못했습니까? Little did I know that I was watching a video that had gone viral produced by a fan of Brave Girls performing for a very enthusiastic Korean Military, with quotes from current & former soldiers about how Brave Girls’ song Rollin' had impacted them. (* Kudos to BG for performing over 100 of these low-pay Gigs to support the people responsible for protecting their freedoms) More videos popped up incl. High Heels (also performed for the military). Both songs were very catchy Pop tunes, the girls were certainly cute and their routines pretty sassy, without the in-your-face overt sexuality we see in too many female artists here in the U.S.

나는 매우 열광적인 한국군을 위해 공연하는 Brave Girls 의 팬이 제작한 비디오를 보고 있고, Brave Girls 의 노래 Rollin'이 그들에게 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지에 대한 현 및 전 군인의 인용문을 보고 있다는 것을 거의 몰랐습니다. After watching a few more performances a video popped up called The Greatest Underdogs in Kpop History: A Story of Brave Girls - telling the Girl's heartwarming story of one of the greatest comebacks. It turns out the group had been formed around 2010-11 and gone through various iterations without any major success. The current line-up was solidified in 2015 and the song Rollin' had originally been released in 2017 with a sexy visual concept but had not been a hit for some reason. Fast-forward to early 2021 and Brave Girls found themselves on the verge of disbandment, with several of the girls having moved out of their dorms and contemplating their next steps. 

몇 번의 공연을 더 본 후에 Kpop 역사상 가장 위대한 약자: 용감한 소녀 이야기 - 가장 위대한 컴백 중 하나에 대한 소녀의 가슴 훈훈한 이야기를 전하는 비디오가 나타났습니다. 그룹은 2010-11년경에 결성되었고 큰 성공 없이 다양한 반복을 거쳤습니다. 현재 라인업은 2015년에 공고히 했고, 원래 2017년에 발표한 곡 롤린'은 섹시한 비주얼 컨셉으로 나왔지만 어쩐지 히트하지 못했다. 2021년 초로 빠르게 돌아가 Brave Girls 는 해산 직전에 있으며, 몇몇 소녀들은 기숙사에서 나와 다음 단계를 고려하고 있습니다.

Brave Girls “visual” Yujeong is quoted as saying; "nothing we do will work out, because nothing the four of us have done has worked out so far".

브레이브걸스의 '비주얼' 유정은 이렇게 말했다. "우리 넷이 지금까지 한 일이 하나도 없었기 때문에 우리가 하는 일은 아무 일도 일어나지 않을 것입니다."

This line resonated with me as I know the feeling of failing, of trying so hard and doing your best work but nothing really happening; You feel like you're wasting your life & question why you're doing what you're doing, and if it’s time to call it quits and try something else. I'm sure most people can relate to this feeling at one time or another and hearing this made me really want to root for them because they had persevered through so much and hadn't given up.

Then something incredible happened; the fan video of Rollin’ went viral and the girls’ lives were about to be forever changed. The song that nobody outside of the Korean military seemed to know started soaring up the Korean music charts, going all the way to No.1 and achieving the rare feat of a Kpop "All Kill" - being No.1 on all 6 major charts. They also received their first ever music show awards wins over the likes of Twice & other household Kpop icons; The look of disbelief as the tears rolled down their cheeks on stage melted hearts across the nation and Brave Girls become the feel-good story of the year in which Covid had still shut down most of the world. Four women who didn’t fit the young ultra-skinny Korean “beauty” mold and were past their music prime in Kpop years (approaching their 30’s) had gone from obscurity & extinction to becoming one of the most popular groups. And after sacrificing so much for 5 years, with little money and at one time 4 girls in 1 dorm, Yujeong, Yuna, Eunji & Minyoung could now live in their own place and enjoy life a little with some money in their pockets and a host of new opportunities for TV appearances incl. Music-Entertainment Shows like Queendom 2 & SNL Korea, Commercials/Endorsements (Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle, Food/Drinks incl. Pepsi), and their own side-projects on their social platforms. In fact, Brave Girls are now an official Ambassador for the Korean Tourism industry!

그러자 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. Rollin'의 팬 비디오는 입소문을 냈고 소녀들의 삶은 영원히 바뀔 뻔했습니다. 국군 외엔 아무도 몰랐던 곡이 국내 음원차트 급등, 1위, 케이팝 '올킬' 6개 주요차트 모두 1위 등 드문 위업을 달성했다. . 그들은 또한 트와이스 및 기타 가정용 K팝 아이콘을 제치고 사상 최초의 음악 쇼 상을 수상했습니다. 무대 위에서 눈물이 볼을 타고 흘러내리는 믿기지 않는 모습은 온 나라의 마음을 녹이고 브레이브걸스는 여전히 코로나가 전 세계 대부분을 셧다운시킨 올해의 기분 좋은 이야기가 되었습니다. 한국의 초소형 '미인'이라는 틀에 어울리지 않고 음악 전성기를 지난(30대에 육박하는) K팝의 여성 4명이 무명과 소멸에서 가장 인기 있는 그룹 중 하나로 성장했습니다. 그리고 5년 동안 적은 돈으로 한 번에 4명의 여자를 한 기숙사에서 희생한 유정, 유나, 은지, 민영은 이제 주머니에 약간의 돈과 호스트로 각자의 집에서 살며 약간의 삶을 즐길 수 있게 되었습니다. TV 출연을 위한 새로운 기회 Queendom 2 및 SNL Korea 와 같은 음악 엔터테인먼트 쇼, 광고/보증 (패션, 뷰티 및 라이프스타일, 음식/음료, 펩시 포함) 및 소셜 플랫폼의 자체 사이드 프로젝트. 실제로 Brave Girls 는 이제 한국 관광 산업의 공식 홍보대사가 되었습니다!

As I explored Kpop more I discovered some great Pop/R*B-Dance music along with what I loved and had produced myself in my short music career. The Brave Girls’ song We Ride was my absolute favorite with its smooth R&B groove, and while I didn't know what they were singing about save for a few English words & phrases most Kpop songs have infused, I fell in love with the music and something happened inside of me; I rediscovered the love & passion for music that I had lost & given up on to pursue more responsible activities as a husband & father with a mortgage i.e. grown-up stuff. As I played along with their songs and others from my other Kpop fav. Twice, I started wanting to revisit some of my old songs and write/produce new music again. A fire that had laid dormant having been extinguished by the financial realities of the US music industry as it slowly declined in the early 2000s, was suddenly alive and new opportunities & possibilities were entering my mind.

내가 Kpop 을 더 많이 탐구하면서 나는 내가 사랑하고 나의 짧은 음악 경력에서 나 자신을 프로듀스한 것과 함께 훌륭한 Pop/R*B-Dance 음악을 발견했습니다. Brave Girls 의 노래 We Ride 는 부드러운 R&B 그루브가 있는 제가 절대적으로 좋아하는 곡이었고, 대부분의 Kpop 노래에 주입된 몇 가지 영어 단어와 구절을 제외하고 그들이 무엇에 대해 노래하고 있는지 몰랐지만 저는 그 음악과 사랑에 빠졌습니다. 그리고 내 안에서 무슨 일이 일어났습니다. 어른이 된 물건을 담보로 남편과 아빠로서 더 책임감 있는 활동을 추구하며 잃어버리고 포기했던 음악에 대한 사랑과 열정을 재발견했습니다. 내가 좋아하는 다른 Kpop 의 노래와 다른 사람들과 함께 연주하면서. 두 번, 예전 노래를 다시 보고 새로운 음악을 작곡/프로듀싱하고 싶어지기 시작했습니다. 2000년대 초반 서서히 쇠퇴하면서 미국 가요계의 재정적 현실로 꺼지던 잠잠했던 불이 갑자기 살아나며 새로운 기회와 가능성이 떠올랐다.

Not everyone was as enthused. My family thought I was going through a delayed mid-life crisis; Why are watching all these Girl Groups and their BTS videos? Are you O.K.? This is weird; you're too old to be doing this....etc. etc. O.K. I admit, the girls are beautiful and the pure "idol" image is refreshing compared to the over-sexualized image we see here, but it's really all about the Music, and people like Brave Brother, JYP & YG’s Teddy Park are producing some of the best Pop - R&B - Dance music there is; it's pure pop, with great grooves and actual melodies, something lacking in so much of today's music. Most of all, it's fun + lighthearted and brings joy to the heart in a world where people seem to be overcome by darkness because what they're listening to and watching is just making them more mad & sad, depressed & overwhelmed. And no Kpop will not save the world or change your life - (only Jesus can do that) - but it can lift your spirit & mood, and it's great to exercise too. In fact, my BraveGirls + TWICE music playlists have helped me get in the best shape I’ve been in years - shedding over 10lbs this year as I hike & run up the fire trail to their up-tempo songs.

모두가 그렇게 열광하지는 않았습니다. 우리 가족은 내가 지연된 중년의 위기를 겪고 있다고 생각했습니다. 왜 이 많은 걸그룹과 방탄소년단의 영상을 보는 걸까요? 괜찮으세요.? 이것은 이상하다. 당신은 이것을하기에는 너무 늙었습니다 .... 등. 등. 우리가 여기서 보는 지나치게 성적인 이미지에 비해 소녀들이 아름답고 순수한 "아이돌" 이미지가 상쾌하다는 것을 인정합니다. 그러나 그것은 음악에 관한 것입니다. 그리고 Brave Brother, JYP & YG 의 Teddy Park 와 같은 사람들이 일부를 프로듀싱하고 있습니다. 최고의 팝 - R&B - 댄스 음악이 있습니다. 그것은 훌륭한 그루브와 실제 멜로디가 있는 순수한 팝이며 오늘날의 음악에는 많이 부족합니다. 무엇보다 듣기만 하고 보고만 있어도 화나고 슬프고 우울하고 벅차오르는 어둠에 휩싸인 세상에서 재미있고 가볍고 마음에 기쁨을 준다. 그리고 어떤 Kpop 도 세상을 구하거나 당신의 삶을 바꾸지 못할 것입니다 - (오직 예수님만이 그렇게 하실 수 있습니다) - 당신의 정신과 기분을 고양시킬 수 있으며 운동하기에도 좋습니다. 사실, 내 BraveGirls + TWICE 음악 재생 목록은 내가 몇 년 동안 최고의 몸매를 만드는 데 도움이 되었습니다. 올해 그들의 업템포 노래에 맞춰 하이킹을 하고 파이어 트레일을 달릴 때 10파운드 이상을 감량했습니다.

Now back to Brave Girls...It would be an understatement to say I was excited when I heard they were about to undertake their 1st U.S. Tour. Even with just 1/2 dozen songs on my playlist @ the time, I waited for tickets to go on sale and purchased my VVIP ticket @ the promoter StudioPAV kpoptickets.com site, albeit with a few disappointments. One of the things I love about Kpop is the unique relationship between the Artists and their Fans. Unlike some of the self-absorbed rock-stars were seen over the years here, KPop artists exist to serve their fans and try and provide for more personalized experiences through Fan-Signs where you get to meet & say a few words to each act's members while they sign a poster or CD, and even give a small letter-card-gift. There are snapshot photos where you get to pose for a Polaroid picture with your favorite member, group photos, and Hi-Touch, where you get to Hi-Five members before or after the show. There are also VIP options to sit in sound checks and hear some Q&As...all designed to provide a more intimate audience-artist experience, and something acts here in the US would do well to imitate because it creates a relationship that transcends merely being a faceless"Fan", to feeling like you're valued "Friends".

이제 Brave Girls 로 돌아가서... 그들이 첫 번째 미국 투어를 시작한다는 소식을 들었을 때 설렜다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다. 내 재생 목록 @ 시간에 1/2 다스의 노래 만 있어도 티켓이 판매 될 때까지 기다렸다가 몇 가지 실망 이었지만 발기인 StudioPAV kpoptickets.com 사이트에서 VVIP 티켓을 구입했습니다. 내가 Kpop 에 대해 좋아하는 것 중 하나는 아티스트와 팬 간의 독특한 관계입니다. 몇 년 동안 이곳에서 자신만만했던 일부 록스타와 달리 KPop 아티스트는 팬에게 서비스를 제공하고 각 멤버를 만나고 몇 마디 할 수 있는 Fan-Signs 를 통해 보다 개인화된 경험을 제공하기 위해 존재합니다. 포스터나 CD 에 사인을 하고 작은 편지 카드를 선물하기도 합니다. 좋아하는 멤버와 함께 폴라로이드 사진을 찍을 수 있는 스냅샷, 단체 사진, 공연 전후에 하이파이브 멤버들과 만나는 하이터치도 있다. 또한 건전한 확인을 하고 Q&A 를 들을 수 있는 VIP 옵션도 있습니다. 이 모든 것은 보다 친밀한 청중-아티스트 경험을 제공하기 위해 고안되었으며, 미국의 어떤 행위는 단순히 존재를 초월하는 관계를 생성하기 때문에 모방하는 것이 좋습니다. 얼굴없는 "팬", "친구"로 평가받는 느낌.

(Part 2) Brave Girls LA Showtime! (후편) 브레이브걸스 LA 쇼타임!

It’s show day! After working out, getting cleaned up & dressed it was time to make the 35min. drive from Burbank to the quaint old Ebell Wilshire in Los Angeles. I wanted to get there early to avoid traffic and make sure I got a good parking spot, check in, drop off my autographed poster & photoset, and relax before making the line in my ticket purchase order. There was ample parking in the adjacent lot and after changing into an artsy orange Australian aboriginal design T-shirt to stay cool I picked up my VVIP badge and BG goodies packet and sat in the back of my Jeep to kill some time. There I met Raul a Kpop fan who has just ridden a couple of hours on his motorbike for the show. Raul was also a big Twice fan, so much so that he had traveled across the county and attended 4 shows. We talked for about an hour and a half about our favorite artists & "bias", songs, and upcoming tours for acts like Sunmi, Itzy, etc., before it was time to make the line that stretched all around the building. I was pleasantly surprised to see a very even and mixed crowd of males & females of all ages & nationalities. Sure, there were more Koreans there than any other race but everyone I spoke to was very cordial and StudioPAV volunteers did a good job getting people placed in line based on their ticket order-of-purchase cue number before doors were opened and we ran to choose our seats. The Ebell can seat over 1200 people, with about 855 on the lower Orchestra level and another 168+ on the Loge/Balcony which was opened for this show. I was able to get an aisle seat about 7 rows back and my friend Raul was 1-2 rows behind me on the aisle stage left. Brave Girls music was playing aloud and as the crowd filled in both the lower and upper seating sections the audience’s anticipation & excitement grew as we approached the scheduled 7 pm. showtime!

쇼데이다! 운동을 마치고 정리정돈과 옷차림까지 35분의 시간을 가졌습니다. Burbank 에서 Los Angeles 의 고풍스러운 오래된 Ebell Wilshire 까지 운전하십시오. 교통 체증을 피하고 좋은 주차 공간을 확보하기 위해 일찍 도착하고, 체크인하고, 사인된 포스터와 사진 세트를 반납하고, 티켓 구매 주문서에 줄을 놓기 전에 긴장을 풀고 싶었습니다. 인접한 주차장에 충분한 주차 공간이 있었고 시원한 오렌지색 호주 원주민 디자인 티셔츠로 갈아입고 시원하게 지내기 위해 VVIP 배지와 BG 선물 꾸러미를 들고 지프 뒤에 앉아 시간을 보냈습니다. 그곳에서 나는 쇼를 위해 오토바이를 몇 시간 탔던 Raul Kpop 팬을 만났습니다. Raul 은 또한 트와이스의 열렬한 팬이어서 카운티 전역을 여행하고 4개의 쇼에 참석했습니다. 1시간 30분 정도 우리가 좋아하는 아티스트와 "편견", 노래, 선미, ITZY 등의 활동 예정인 투어에 대해 이야기하고 건물 전체에 줄을 긋기 전에. 나는 모든 연령대와 국적의 남성과 여성이 매우 고르고 혼합된 군중을 보고 매우 놀랐습니다. 물론 그곳에는 다른 어떤 인종보다 한국인이 많았지만 내가 이야기한 모든 사람들은 매우 친절했고 StudioPAV 자원 봉사자들은 문이 열리기 전에 티켓 구매 큐 번호에 따라 사람들이 줄을 서도록 잘 해주었습니다. 우리 좌석을 선택하십시오. Ebell 은 1200명이 넘는 인원을 수용할 수 있으며, 이 공연을 위해 열린 낮은 오케스트라 레벨에는 약 855명, Loge/Balcony 에는 168명 이상을 수용할 수 있습니다. 나는 약 7열 뒤쪽 통로 좌석을 얻을 수 있었고 내 친구 Raul 은 왼쪽 통로 무대 왼쪽에서 1-2열 뒤에 있었습니다. 브레이브걸스의 음악이 흥겹게 흘러나오며 하층석과 상층석을 가득 메운 인파로 예정된 저녁 7시가 가까워지자 관객들의 기대감과 설렘은 더욱 커졌다. 쇼타임!

An introduction video played on a giant screen that would provide a colorful backdrop throughout the show. And to rambunctious applause the girls took the stage to perform their opening set, kicking off with their last single Thank You & We Ride (my personal fav. BG song), before taking some time to introduce themselves and thank everyone for their support. The girls had saved the best for last - or maybe just grown in confidence & got better as their US Tour progressed - and looked & sounded amazing! And despite the masks, the crowd was quite vocal - as they stood in their seats cheering and singing along with phones held high to capture the highlights. My new friend Raul was definitely the loudest guy in the room (bar none). I was a little more reserved trying to conserve energy and get through the show “masked”. 

쇼 전체에 다채로운 배경을 제공할 대형 스크린에서 재생되는 소개 비디오. 그리고 열광적인 박수를 보내기 위해 소녀들은 무대에 올라 마지막 싱글 Thank You & We Ride (개인적으로 가장 좋아하는 BG 곡) 로 시작하여 오프닝 세트를 선보인 후 잠시 시간을 내어 자신을 소개하고 지원해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 소녀들은 마지막을 위해 최선을 다했거나 미국 투어가 진행되면서 자신감이 생기고 더 좋아졌습니다. 그리고 마스크에도 불구하고 군중은 매우 목소리가 높았습니다. 하이라이트를 포착하기 위해 전화기를 높이 들고 좌석에 앉아 환호하고 노래했습니다. 내 새 친구 Raul 은 확실히 방에서 가장 시끄러운 사람이었습니다(바 없음). 나는 에너지를 절약하고 "마스크" 쇼를 통과하려고 조금 더 자제했습니다.

Feeding off the crowd Brave Girls gave a great tour finale performance with electric energy; from Raul's fav. Yuna - smiling & gliding across the stage effortlessly like a fairy princess in a very cute black outfit; to Eunji's poised and stylish performances with with her long brown-red hair flowing and skin glowing in her black shorts & top accented with a long scarf; to Minyoung showing off her vocal pro-es as one of the best (& in my opinion - underrated) lead vocalists in Kpop, strutting the stage as a “blonde diva” in a form-fitting black-&-white polka-dot dress that really accentuated her lovely figure. And then there was Yujeong,  a woman whose Squirtle-like  smile has captivated many hearts (insert fluttering heart emoji) rapped & danced the night away. I tried to film all the girls but invariably found myself focussing on her while peaking over my phone to try and enjoy as much of the performances in real-time as I could.

Kpop 에서 최고의(내 생각에는 - 과소평가된) 리드 보컬리스트 중 한 명으로 자신의 보컬 프로를 과시하는 민영에게 몸에 꼭 맞는 흑백 폴카 도트 드레스를 입고 "금발의 디바"로 무대를 뽐내고 있습니다. 그것은 그녀의 사랑스러운 모습을 정말로 강조했습니다. 그리고 유정, 꼬부기 같은 미소가 많은 마음을 사로잡은 여성 (펄럭이는 하트 이모티콘 삽입)이 밤새 랩과 춤을 추었습니다. 나는 모든 소녀들을 촬영하려고 노력했지만 항상 실시간으로 가능한 한 많은 공연을 즐기고 즐기려고 내 전화를 만지작 거리면서 그녀에게 집중하고 있음을 발견했습니다.

The girls went through their 1st set moving from their older mid-tempo Don’t Meet & Do You Know to the newer upbeat disco-influenced Love Is Gone & Fever (with Yujeong's "fabulous" rap) from their last 2 mini-albums, before taking a breather to do some Tour Q&A's. In a funny moment, Yujeong & Minyoung were asked about what kind of show concept they would like to do for U.S. audiences in the future and answered that they seem to want "sexy". And indeed, there are louder cheers when the girls do something "sexier" on-stage like in Hi Heels than their regular "sassy" moves. Still, I think they do a pretty good job of keeping things classy & understated while injecting just enough “sassy” dance moves to keep those who came for that happy, which I appreciate being a little more on the conservative side. YMMV.

The 2nd half of the BG show kicked off with the Reggae rhythms of Easily to one of my newfound favorites Help Me with its adorable “I'll give you everything” line & choreography, before the “sexy” crowd-pleasing Hi Heels with its iconic - “I’m a sassy girl, I’m a tough girl, I’m a pretty girl, I’m a foxy girl” lyrics & dance moves. The Summer Queens then let down for the dance-party grooves of Chi Mat Ba Ram & Pool Party and The Ebell was absolutely rockin’ as fans sang along in their seats making their best hand-gesture "moves", as we all grooved to Brave Sound’s infectious beats & melodies. I hadn’t had this much fun in ages and it looked like the girls were “having a good good time - with a big smile” - enjoying it as much as we did.  And then the song that started it all and everyone had waited for - Rollin'. It was amazing to watch as we call sang “Ro-Ro-Rollin -  hey, Ro-Ro-Rollin -  hey” along with our Beautiful, Resilient, Adorable, Victorious & Entertaining Brave Girls, in a beautiful unison that epitomizes the special relationship with K-pop Artists and their Fans, a relationship of one-ness.

BG 쇼의 후반부는 내가 가장 좋아하는 곡 중 하나인 Easily to one 의 레게 리듬으로 시작되었습니다. 사랑스러운 "I'll give you everything" 라인과 안무로 Help Me 를 시작했습니다. 아이코닉 - "나는 건방진 여자, 나는 터프한 여자, 나는 예쁜 여자, 나는 여우 같은 여자" 가사 및 춤 동작. 그런 다음 Summer Queens 는 Chi Mat Ba Ram & Pool Party 의 댄스 파티 그루브에 실망했습니다. 팬들이 자리에서 함께 노래를 부르며 최고의 손짓 "움직임"을 하는 동안 The Ebell 은 절대적으로 흔들리고 있었습니다. 사운드의 전염성 있는 비트와 멜로디. 나는 옛날에 이렇게 많은 재미를 본 적이 없었고 소녀들은 "큰 미소를 지으며 즐거운 시간을 보내는 것"처럼 보였습니다. 우리만큼 즐기는 것 같았습니다. 그리고 모든 것을 시작하고 모두가 기다렸던 노래 - Rollin'. 우리의 Beautiful, Resilient, Adorable, Victorious & Entertaining Brave Girls 와 함께 "Ro-Ro-Rollin - hey, Ro-Ro-Rollin - hey"를 부르며 특별한 관계를 보여주는 아름다운 조화를 이루는 모습은 정말 장관이었습니다. K-POP 아티스트 및 팬과의 하나됨의 관계.

And before we knew it the girls who must have burnt thousands of calories sweating up a storm as they heated up the room were about to enter their 3 song encore. But before doing so, they took some time to share some final thoughts & feelings while catching their breath. In a beautifully poignant moment, lead singer Minyoung was overcome by emotions and she reminded people of how they were on the verge of breaking. And as she looked out at a packed house of (paying) fans, she had to turn her back for a few moments to compose herself. I can only imagine how she felt looking out and seeing a room packed full of appreciative US fans, many of whom can't speak a lick of Korean like me, showering them with so much love & support - even with masks on for almost 2hrs! 

그리고 우리가 그것을 알기도 전에 방을 데우면서 폭풍우에 땀을 흘리며 수천 칼로리를 태웠을 소녀들은 3곡의 앙코르에 들어가려 하고 있었다. 그러나 그 전에 그들은 숨을 고르며 마지막 생각과 감정을 나누는 시간을 가졌습니다. 가슴 뭉클한 감동을 선사하는 아름다운 순간, 리드싱어 민영은 감정에 휩싸여 사람들에게 이별의 순간을 상기시켰다. 그리고 그녀는 (유료) 팬들로 가득 찬 집을 바라보며 잠시 동안 등을 돌린 채 마음을 정리해야 했습니다. 나는 그녀가 밖을 내다보고 감사하는 미국 팬들로 가득 찬 방을 보았을 때 느꼈을지 상상할 수 있습니다. 많은 사람들이 나처럼 한국어를 한 마디도 못하는 사람들이 거의 2 시간 동안 마스크를 쓰고도 그들에게 많은 사랑과 지원을 샤워했습니다. !

Then after exiting the stage to loud chants of “encore”, the girls returned to perform their final set including Whistle ("you make me feel like a queen") from Queendom 2, the triumphant Red Sun ("I won't give up, I will always get up"), and the finale Summer by Myself, where the girls take selfie videos on-stage with the phones of select patrons lucky enough to be front-row - a nice personal touch. But before we made our way outside to head home, there was one final highlight - the Hi-Touch “experience”, where VVIP ticket holders got to Hi-Five all the girls and try and say something short & sweet as we made our way out of the auditorium. I absolutely love this but it was over all too quickly. I don't remember exactly what I said, but it went something like this:

I had planned on saying something else to Yujeong - how I love her smile & spirit -  but that would have taken too long, It was fitting that "Squirtle"  was last in the line & great final memory for me to end a beautiful night @ my first Kpop experience. I'm hoping & praying the girls will come back soon for an encore performance, hopefully without masks so they can see the joy & smiles on our faces as we sing along, and with a fan-sign & snapshot option, along with some merch. we can buy to show our support. And maybe it's time to take a leaf out of the JYP "globalization thru localization" playbook and record a few all-English songs to really break out here in the US. Maybe even English versions of songs like We Ride, Pool Party, Help Me (updated) and dare I say - Rollin'? (performed before a joint US-Korean Military crowd). In the meantime, I'm inspired to be more #brave & #fearless in my Life & Business as I was in my mid-20's when I made my first of 4 annual trips to the US for the New Music Seminar in New York, before moving there permanently in 1992 to pursue my dreams. And for that, I say “THANK YOU” - Brave Girls!
